Demis Hassabis on AI consciousness: “I don’t think we are ready yet as a society”

Demis raises a question that tends to get lost in debates about whether A I \ *can** be conscious which is * have we actually decided whether we want to create conscious AI?** His concern is that this would bring up questions we’re nowhere near agreeing on. Would these systems have moral standing? What would we owe them and so on... He also says we haven't despite thousands of years of thinking agreed on the definition of consciousness (he's a neuroscientist btw) His proposed approach is to build intelligent tools first, then use those tools to advance neuroscience and better understand consciousness. After that, we’d be in a better position to discuss whether to create conscious systems and how to approach it. This is not full discussion, just a short clip. The discussion on AI consciousness lasted for about five minutes, linked below. Interview: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x7Z_1miRWB8
